CHANG MAI
Chiang Mai is the most beautiful city in Thailand surrounded by a ring of mountains. Chiang Mai has a rich and ancient seven hundred year history.
All you need to know about Chang Mai!
Chiang Mai is the second city in Thailand and is located in the mountainous north of the country. The climate is far more seasonal than many other popular tourist and expat destinations with cold winters and scorching hot seasons. Many tourists who visit the city are from nearby China or are backpackers from around the world. Hotels range from cheap hostels to expensive hotels and resorts.
The Old City of Chiang Mai is, as you would imagine central and inside a moat. Remnants of the old city wall still remain in places with Thapae Gate being the most notable example. Inside the moat you will find temples, shops, restaurants and bars which will give you more of a feeling of what life used to be like in the city.
Doi Suthep is the mountain that overlooks the city and is perhaps best known for its temple although there are also some impressive waterfalls, especially in the rainy season along the route to the top. The views across the city are excellent and several viewpoints with small drinking stops can easily be found. This is a popular place with locals and tourists so it is wise to consider this when planning your visit.
Chiang Mai Zoo is located at the foot of Doi Suthep and is home to both animals from around the globe and indigenous species. This is something that is worth seeing if you are in the city and looking to spend a little time away from the hustle and bustle.
There are lots of restaurants and bars in Chiang Mai many of which tend to aim more for locals than tourists although this just adds to their appeal. Western bars and restaurants can be located although they are certainly not as plentiful as they are in other tourist areas in Thailand.
Transportation is very straightforward although the roads can be congested. Songthaews (shared taxis) and tuk tuks are easy to find and will take you anywhere in the city although it should be noted that the city is quite expansive.
